EVALUATION OF MONITORING TECHNIQUES FOR THE CARROT WEEVIL, LISTRONOTUS OREGONENSIS (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE)1

Abstract

Five trap designs were evaluated for their efficiency in capturing overwintering adults of the carrot weevil, Listronotus oregonensis (Le Conte). Trap catches were compared with counts of oviposition and nutrition cavities found in carrots placed on the ground. A trap consisting of 22 wooden plates, separated by metal washers and placed over a carrot which was used as bait, proved to be the most efficient. The weevils crawl between the plates, feed on the carrot, and are collected by dismantling the trap over a pan. This technique provided a seasonal record of carrot-weevil activity comparable to that obtained with carrot sections and can be used to issue insecticide-treatment recommendations prior to the beginning of the carrot-weevil oviposition period.

Résumé

Cinq modèles de pièges ont été évalués pour leur efficacité à capturer les adultes hivernants du charançon de la carotte, Listronotus oregonensis (Le Conte), et ces résultats ont été comparés à des décomptes de piqûres de nutrition et d'oviposition faites sur des carottes placées au sol. Un nouveau modèle de piège consistant en 22 plaques de bois, séparées par des rondelles de métal et placées au-dessus d'une carotte servant d'appât, s'est avéré le plus efficace. Les charançons pénètrent entre les plaques de bois, se nourissent de la carotte et sont récupérés en démontant le piège au-dessus d'un plateau. Les variations saisonnières obtenues par cette technique étaient comparables à celles obtenues au moyen des sections de carottes. Ce modèle de piège peut être utile pour émettre des recommandations de traitement avant le début de la période d'oviposition du charançon.
