Prevalence of four species of egg parasitoids attacking tabanid eggs in Manitoba, Canada

Abstract

Egg masses of the horse fly, Hybomitra nitidifrons nuda (McDunnough), and the deer fly, Chrysops aestuans Wulp (Diptera: Tabanidae), were collected during the summers of 1996–2000 from five different locations in southern Manitoba. On average, hymenopterous egg parasitoids were reared from more than 90% of collected egg masses. Telenomus hybomitrae Iranpour and Galloway and (or) Telenomus utilis Iranpour and Galloway (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae: Telenominae) emerged from multilayered egg masses of H. n. nuda. However, Trichogramma semblidis (Aurivillius) (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) and (or) Telenomus chrysopsis Iranpour and Galloway were reared from single-layered egg masses of C. aestuans. In H. n. nuda egg masses, more than 33% of individual eggs were parasitized and more than an additional 35% were apparently damaged by the two telenomine parasitoids. In C. aestuans egg masses, approximately 40% of individual eggs were parasitized and 18% produced neither parasitoids nor larvae.

Résumé

Pendant les étés 1996 à 2000, nous avons récolté des masses d’oeufs de mouches à cheval Hybomitra nitidifrons nuda (McDunnough) et de mouches à chevreuil Chrysops aestuans Wulp (Diptera: Tabanidae) dans cinq sites différents du sud du Manitoba. En moyenne, nous avons obtenu en élevage des hyménoptères parasitoïdes des oeufs dans plus de 90 % des masses d’oeufs récoltées. Dans les masses d’oeufs à plusieurs couches d’H. nitidifrons nuda, ont émergé Telenomus hybomitrae Iranpour et Galloway et (ou) Telenomus utilis Iranpour et Galloway (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae: Telenominae). En revanche, dans les masses d’oeufs à une seule couche de C. aestuans, nous avons obtenu en élevage Trichogramma semblidis (Aurivillius) (Hymnenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) et (ou) Telenomus chrysopsis Iranpour et Galloway. Au sein des masses d’oeufs d’H. nitidifrons nuda, plus de 33 % des oeufs individuels étaient parasités et plus de 35 % d’oeufs additionnels étaient apparemment endommagés par les deux parasitoïdes télénominés. Dans les masses d’oeufs de C. aestuans, environ 40 % des oeufs individuels étaient parasités et 18 % ne produisaient ni parasitoïdes, ni larves.
