In the following notes, two European species, one a pest of Lilium, are recorded for the first time from North America; an European pest that was introduced into the United States is recorded from Canadian localities; and a Mexican species not noted previously from the United States is recorded from Texas. The five forms described as new belong to difficult groups in which the species show strong monophagous tendencies.

Flies belonging to the genus Pseudochaeta are widely distributed in the United States and southern Canada but the allied genus Phaenopsis has not been recorded hitherto from North America. A recent study of the accumulated material in these genera has brought to light a number of distinct species, which are described below. I am especially indebted to C. F. W. Muesebeck, Dr. R. H. Beamer and A. R. Brooks for the loan of material. Types of the new species are in my collection.

The new genus described in this paper is based upon a specimen in a collection made by Prof. V. E. Shelford in Southern California. It pertains to the group for which I, some years ago, erected the family Sogonidae, the known representatives of which occur in Mexico and adjoining parts of the United States. The new genus may be placed among those previously known by means of the following key.

Under this general title, I plan publish from time to time taxonomic and biologic notes on several groups of Coleoptera in which I am particularly interested. This paper discusses the characters and habits of four species and adds some general observations on the family Silphidae.

The preceding part under this title was published in 1945 (Can. Ent., 77:204-208). The species discussed at this time are chiefly from Oregon, where they were collected by my friends, Dr. James A. Macnab and Mr. Kenneth M. Fender, to whom I am indebted for the privilege of retaining the type materials. Dr. Macnab and Mr. Fender are engaged in detailed studies of this most interesting part of the Coast range and already have added vastly to our previous knowledge in many groups of insects.

The recent, acquisition of material in the present subfamily Malachiinae has brought to light several new species, as well as afforded an opportunity for observations on other species in the group that are believed to be worthy of recording.

Until recently I have been applying the name caryaefoliella Clem. to the common species of eastern Ontario, the cases of which are found on hickory (C. glabra and C. cordiformis) and which I mentioned and figured in one of my previous papers (1933, Can. Ent., LXV, 161, Pl. X, figs. 19-21). However in early June, 1944, Mr. T. N. Freeman collected a number of cases on shag-bark hickory (C. ovata) at Pt. Rowan in southern Ontario which produced adults very similar in color and maculation, it is true, to our eastern Ontario species, but differing markedly in male genitalic characters.

As a result of breeding carried on in the course of Insect Faunal Survey in the Maritime Provinces, combined with a study of genitalic characters, it has been found that the present application of names, especially in the alnivorella group and the so-called “red-winged forms”, is very faulty. More species, similar in general appearance but easily differrentiated on male genital characters, have been found to occur than has been previously supposed; it is with a view of straightening out the nomenclature that the following notes have been prepared.

This giant race of the species freija Thun. was collected along the Alaska Military Highway in British Columbia. In size and wing shape this would appear to be a race of frigga Thun. rather than of freija, and we have no doubt but that those who depend on external characters only will insist that we are in error; nevertheless gentalic study leaves no doubt as to its true relationship with freija.

Male. Closely allied to difformis Sm., especially to the paler colored forms of this variable species. Antennae strongly serrate and fasciculate as in difformis. Thoracic vestiture rather rough, composed of scales and hair, light smoky gray. Primaries pale smoky, with a slightly grayer tinge than is usually found in difformis. Maculation similar to that of difformis but scarcely as distinct, the crosslines being less contrastingly dark and the spots less distinctly outlined. The main difference occurs in the secondaries which are entirely pearly white with no traces of the postmedian line and subterminal smoky shade found in difformis. Expanse 30 mm.

The following reports the activities of the Montreal Branch of the Entomological Society of Ontario for the 73rd year.

Eight meetings were held during the 1945-46 season, six in the Lyman Room, Redpath Museum, McGill University and two in the Entomological Laboratory, University of Montreal. The average number present at the meetings was eleven, a reduction of four when compared with the figure for last year. This falling off in attendance can be accounted for in part, we believe, by the very severe weather experienced on the occasion of three of our meetings.

The spring of 1945 was in general very unfavorable for the majority of Lepidoptera in the Ottawa area, due apparently to the killing frosts and wet weather of the latter half of April and throughout May, following abnormally high temperatures late in March and early April. However Coleophoridae were the exception to this condition and the cases of this group were much more abundant than usual. The continued cold, dry, winter weather, without any of the customary alternating thawing and freezing spells was seemingly very suitable to the hibernating larvae; the early warmth stirred them out of their winter lethargy fully a month sooner than usual and their cases proved a protection against the subsequent cold.

Since the appearance of the article on the difficult truncata-citrata group of this genus by Swett (1917, Can. Ent., XLIX,, 64) and by Barnes and McDunnough (1917, Contr., III, (4), 227, Pls. XXI, XXX; 1918, Contri., IV, (2), 137) little has been published concerning the North American representatives with the exception of the addition of a couple of new form-names by Wright and Blackmore. In the European literature several important papers, however, dealing with the Palaearctic species of the genus, have appeared; chief among these is the very comprehensive Monograph of the Palaearctic Species by Dr. P. Heydemann (1929, Mitt. Munch. Ent. Gesells., 207-292, Pls. I-XV) copiously illustrated with figures of the adults and of the genitalia, both male and female.

This paper describes all stages of the spruce budworm parasite Apanteles fumiferanae Viereck, including the adult. Illustrations of all stages are presented. A short account of the life history of the host is included.

Larval descriptions are useful, but if these same descriptions can be satisfactorily tied together by an artificial key, their value is greatly enhanced. Herewith a key is presented for the determination of mature geometrid larvae on which notes have been published in this periodical since 1941.

In 1941 Irvine Fox (Canad. Ent., 73:2) stated in an article on North American Japygidae that not a single species had been reported from Canada, and no subsequent record appears in the literature. It is therefore a privilege to be able to publish the first record of the occurrence of one of these interesting insects in Canada.

Macrocentrus gifuensis Ashm. a braconid of the subfamily Macrocentrinae is a parasite of the European corn borer, Pyrausta nubilalis Hubn., in both Europe and the Orient. It was introduced into America as a possible agent in the biological control of this pest. It has been bred in the laboratory for release by the author over an extended period, during which time comprehensive data on its life history have been accumulated (Wishart, 1946). Eggs are laid in the immature corn borer larvae and their polyembryonic development has been adequately described by Parker (1931).
