Abstract

This paper deals with noun complements in French. I show that French has a particular kind of noun complement, regularly expressed by [de NP], that cannot be analysed as a PP or as a Possessor, but nevertheless requires a syntactic account. A detailed analysis reveals that these constituents share morphosyntactic, semantic and discourse properties with those of pseudo-incorporated nominals in various languages. I thus propose that they be analysed as pseudo-incorporated into a possessive nominal head.

Dans cet article, nous montrons qu’il existe en français un type particulier de «complément du nom», régulièrement exprimé sous la forme [de NP], qui n’est analysable ni comme un complément prépositionnel, ni comme relevant d’une construction possessive, bien que la relation qui l’unit à la tête nominale dont il dépend soit bien de nature syntaxique. Les propriétés de ces compléments du nom révèlent qu’ils sont comparables, en morphosyntaxe comme dans les domaines sémantique et discursif, à des syntagmes décrits comme pseudo-incorporés dans diverses langues. En conséquence, nous proposons une analyse en termes de pseudo-incorporation à une tête nominale possessive.
