Agency Participation and Problem Occurrence Among the Elderly*

Abstract

Six hundred and forty two randomly selected elderly living in the various communities which make up the Capital Regional District of British Columbia were interviewed during the summer of 1984. This secondary analysis of those data focuses on the respondents' perceptions of problems they were having such as transportation, health, finances and also on their awareness of, or involvement with, a range of community services including recreation, health, social and transportation. Data revealed that the elderly were very aware of most of the services in the community but that involvement with services was related to health status, age, gender, marital status and income.

Résumé

Au cours de l'été 1984 des entrevues furent exécutées auprès de 642 personnes âgées choisies au hasard, et residant dans la région métropolitaine de Victoria, Colombie-Britannique.

Cette présente analyse secondaire des données concerne leur perception de leurs problèmes: problèmes de santé, de transport, et d'argent. L'analyse concentre aussi sur les services sociaux et récréatifs communautaires; la population âgée connait-elle l'existence de ces services, et en prend-elle avantage?

Les résultats de l'analyse indiquent que les personnes âgées connaissent bien la plupart des services mais les utilisent plus ou moins assiduement selon leur état de santé, leur sexe, leur situation maritale, et leur revenu.
