Few subjects seem more obvious candidates for comparative historical treatment than Protestant evangelicalism, which has played a prominent role in the religious life of English-speaking nations since the eighteenth century. In spite of this fact, until recently historians have tended to ignore the transnational dimension of the evangelical movement and have focused instead on local, regional, and national studies. The contributors to Evangelicalism: Comparative Studies of Popular Protestantism in North America, the British Isles, and Beyond, 1700–1990 are therefore to be commended for ministering to a pressing need.
