This article studies unipotent orbital integrals on symplectic and orthogonal groups from the point of view of endoscopy. It begins by partitioning stable unipotent classes into packets and goes on to propose a transfer of these packets. It then discusses (in rough form) the associated transfer factors. Some supporting calculations in split odd orthogonal groups are given.

A cubic fourfold is a smooth cubic hypersurface of dimension four; it is special if it contains a surface not homologous to a complete intersection. Special cubic fourfolds form a countably infinite union of irreducible families ${\mathcal F}$$_d$, each a divisor in the moduli space ${\mathcal F}$ of cubic fourfolds. For an infinite number of these families, the Hodge structure on the nonspecial cohomology of the cubic fourfold is essentially the Hodge structure on the primitive cohomology of a K3 surface. We say that this K3 surface is associated to the special cubic fourfold. In these cases, ${\mathcal F}$$_d$ is related to the moduli space ${\mathcal N}$$_d$ of degree d K3 surfaces. In particular, ${\mathcal C}$ contains infinitely many moduli spaces of polarized K3 surfaces as closed subvarieties. We can often construct a correspondence of rational curves on the special cubic fourfold parametrized by the K3 surface which induces the isomorphism of Hodge structures. For infinitely many values of d, the Fano variety of lines on the generic cubic fourfold of ${\mathcal C}$$_d$ is isomorphic to the Hilbert scheme of length-two subschemes of an associated K3 surface.

We construct certain raising operators of row type for Macdonald's symmetric polynomials by an interpolation method.

In this paper, we determine the residues at poles of standard intertwining operators for parabolically induced representations of an arbitrary connected reductive quansisplit algebraic group over a p-acid field whenever the unipotent radical of the parabolic subgroup is Abelian. We then interpret these residues by means of the theory of endoscopy.

A question of Igusa (from 1978) inquires about the singular behavior of the singular series, determined by a polynomial mapping ${\mathbf P}$ :K$^n$→K$^m$, m[les ]n, where K is a local field of characteristic zero. This paper describes in geometric terms the singularities of the singular series for two classes of polynomial maps ${\mathbf P}$=(P$_1$, P$_2$):K$^n$→K$^2$. The main result, which makes possible this description, is a type of uniformization of ${\mathbf P}$ by finitely many monomial maps μ(${\mathbf x}$)=(${\mathbf x}$$^$$_1$, ${\mathbf x}$$^ $$_2$), such that rank ($^$$_1$$_$$_2$)= 2. This is proved using resolution of singularities. Using this result, nontrivial estimates of oscillatory integrals with phase λ$_1$P$_1$+ λ$_2$P$_2$ are possible. These will be described elsewhere.

The Hermitian function field H= K(x,y) is defined by the equation yq+y=xq +1 (q being a power of the characteristic of K). Over K=${\mirrored F}$q2 it is a maximal function field; i.e. the number N(H) of ${\mirrored F}$q2-rational places attains the Hasse–Weil upper bound N(H)=q2+1+2g(H)·q. All subfields K[subnE ] E⊆H are also maximal. In this paper we construct a large number of nonrational subfields E⊆H, by considering the fixed fields H$^{\mathcal G}$ under certain groups ${\mathcal G}$ of automorphisms of H/K. Thus we obtain many integers g[ges ]0 that occur as the genus of some maximal function field over ${\mirrored F}$q2.

For infinite-dimensional homotopy space forms X/G with G nontrivial finite cyclic groups, we study the homotopy type of X/G. We show that the Euler class of X/G is not zero if and only if X/G is finitely dominated.

Moduli spaces of pointed curves with some level structure are studied. We prove that for so-called geometric level structures, the levels encountered in the boundary are smooth if the ambient variety is smooth, and in some cases we can describe them explicitly. The smoothness implies that the moduli space of pointed curves (over any field) admits a smooth finite Galois cover. Finally, we prove that some of these moduli spaces are simply connected.

In this article the degree of the discriminant of an elliptic pencil on a projective curve is upper-bounded by using the degree of its conductor and the genus of the base curve. This is done in the most general case, extending a method and a result of Szpiro (1981 and 1990a) and a result of Hindry and Silvermann. The difficult part, dealing with characteristic 2 and 3 and additive reductions, need the introduction of a new object – which we called ’conducteur efficace‘ – defined by using differentials and interestingly comparable to the usual conductor. This article ends with a few results in the arithmetical case – case corresponding to an inequality conjectured by the second author in 1978: (1) the proof of this inequality in the potentially good reduction cases; (2) the passage from the semi-stable reduction to the general case for a strong inequality.

We will give explicit bounds for the number of solutions of polynomial-exponential equations. In contrast to earlier work, the bounds are independent of the coefficients of the equations, and they are of only single exponential growth in the number of coefficients.
