Extract
The Shaker movement in this country as a socio-religious separatist venture, was representative of the character and growth of America. The single minded community, devoted to a particular ideal, reflects a major aspect of America's early social character. The various religious communities, whether Quaker, Shaker, Brook Farm, transcendental or other, were manifestations of a spirit which was fostered by conditions in a new world.
