Réfutations de Spinoza divin dans les premières réfutations de Spinoza

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article evaluates the strategies used by Christian philosophers to counter the invasion of Spinozist ideas between 1680 and 1720. The analysis of these refutations reveals a significant evolution in the way they unfolded. I wish to show that the argument from finality, or God’s design, was the favored strategy against Spinoza that was selected in the end. This article aims to understand the reasons for this choice, and why the Catholic Church waited more than twenty years after Spinoza’s death to get organized and refute him directly.

Résumé : Ce texte s’interroge sur la stratégie de défense mise en place par les philosophes chrétiens contre l’invasion des idées spinozistes entre les années 1680 et 1720. L’analyse des réfutations proposée ici révèle une évolution significative dans le cours de leur développement. Nous désirons montrer que l’argument de choix qui a finalement été retenu comme stratégie défensive contre Spinoza est l’argument de la finalité ou du dessein divin. Ce texte tente de comprendre ce choix ainsi que les raisons pour lesquelles il a fallu attendre presque vingt ans après la mort de Spinoza pour que l’Église catholique s’organise et se décide à le réfuter directement.
