In December 2000, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) determined that mercury emitted to the air during coal-fired electric generation posed a public health concern. This finding was coupled with an announcement that the agency intended to establish stringent limits on stack emissions of the pollutant no later than December 2004.
