CALL FOR PAPERS FOR EMERGING SCHOLARS WORKSHOP

European Law Open (ELO) delivers a dynamic, critical and contextual approach to European law in an Open Access format. The journal is open to different voices, different concerns, and different methodologies, offering a platform for rigorous analysis of both EU law itself and wider European law and governance in their political, cultural, social and economic contexts.

European Law Open is delighted to announce the launch of our Emerging Scholars Workshop

The Workshop brings together emerging with established scholars to develop the researching, drafting and publishing skills of early career researchers. The aims of the Workshop are:

• to develop manuscripts which show promise, so that they can be revised for peer-review and eventual publication in European Law Open, or other journals;
• to encourage and support innovative scholarship on the EU by early career researchers;
• to help build academic networks and academic collaboration between emerging and established scholars, while demystifying the academic publishing process;
• to enrich the diversity of voices within the EU law community by increasing the representation of scholars from the global South and from underrepresented groups.

The Emerging Scholars Workshop will take place online during the launch of the inaugural issue of European Law Open: 16 and 17 June 2022

Eligibility

The Emerging Scholars Workshop is open to manuscript submissions by advanced doctoral students and early-career legal academics. You should be:

• a PhD candidate, or
• a postdoctoral researcher with no more than five years of research experience, or
• a ‘junior’ / early career academic who does not have ‘tenure’
• you do not have to have any institutional affiliation to be able to participate in the Workshop.

We particularly encourage applications from scholars located in, or originating from, the global South and/or underrepresented or minority communities working in any field in European Union law.

Application Process

If you have a manuscript in progress that deals with any theoretical, methodological, and/or empirical problem in the field of EU law, we invite you to submit your manuscript for consideration at the Emerging Scholars Workshop. You need to submit: 

• a 10-15 page long writing sample from your current research;
• a cover letter listing your name, address, affiliation (if any), contact details, your areas of study and places and dates of degrees, and the title/s of your current research project/s;
• the cover letter should also include a brief background statement about your motivation for participating in the Workshop and the expectations you have.

 After your submission, the ELO Editorial Board will undertake an initial assessment on your proposed manuscript in terms of its relevance to and fit with the aims of European Law Open. We will attempt to inform you about our decision within one month of your manuscript submission.

The Emerging Scholars Workshop will take place during the launch of the inaugural issue of European Law Open: 16 and 17 June 2022, online.

Provided that the pandemic situation allows, the ELO will consider moving the emerging scholars workshop offline. If such a situation occurs, the ELO will pay for travel and accommodation costs for successful applicants to attend the workshop. Of course, in order to increase accessibility, we will always consider requests for virtual participation.
