Resumen

Objetivo.

Explorar los conocimientos de los médicos generales (MG) de los síntomas y la epidemiología de la esquizofrenia y las características de los MG asociadas con el nivel de conocimientos.

Método.

Se envió por correo cuestionarios de encuesta que exploraban el ejercicio profesional en los pacientes con psicosis temprana a todos los MG en el sudoeste de Francia (n = 3829). Se pidió a los MG que respondieran anónimamente a preguntas sobre los síntomas y la epidemiología de la esquizofrenia.

Resultados.

La tasa de respuesta fue 23,6%. Los MG tenían un buen conocimiento teórico de los síntomas de la esquizofrenia, pero subestimaban la prevalencia y el riesgo de suicido. La asistencia reciente a un curso de formación médica continuada (FMC) sobre esquizofrenia era el predictor principal del nivel de conocimientos sobre las cifras epidemiológicas, aunque su impacto fue relativamente modesto. Con respecto a los factores de riesgo, más de la mitad de los MG consideró la implicación de factores genéticos como nula o modesta, mientras que una gran proporción de ellos afirmó que perturbaciones de la interacción madre-hijo estaban implicadas con frecuencia en la causa del trastorno.

Conclusión.

Es preciso mejorar el nivel de conocimientos de los MG sobre las repercusiones en la salud pública y los factores de riesgo de la esquizofrenia para promover la provisión de información precisa y desestigmatizadora a los pacientes de atención primaria.
