Dr Mitchell, now retired from clinical practice, was a consultant psychiatrist in Cambridge and was particularly interested in the use of art, music and drama therapy in helping patients with serious mental illnesses come to terms with their disorder. He was also impressed by the emergence of creative skills in patients during their most disturbed periods, skills which had not been recognized before, and which would not necessarily continue after successful treatment.
