page 80 note 1 Mr W. H. Bensted long ago called attention to the occurrence of bands of spicula in the Kentish Ragstone Quarries at Maidstone. The workmen suffered with inflammation in their hands, which Mr. Bensted discovered to be due to the irritation caused by these fossil-sponge spicules penetrating the skin.
