Extract

In his work entitled “Die Versteinerungen Würtembergs” C. H. v. Zieten figured and briefly described a species under the name Ammonites calcar. The description is as follows:“Rücken gewölbt, Rückenlinie spornradförmig gezackt; er hat in dem Baa seiner Rippen und dem erhöhten Saum seiner Windungen grosse Aehnlichkeit mit dem vorhergehenden [i.e. Ammonites bipartitus, Zieten], unterscheidet sich jedoch von ihm sogleich durch seine einfach gezackte Rückenlinie. Aus dem untern Oolith bei Guttenberg.”

page 554 note 1 This work was issued between 1830 and 1834 in twelve parts of six plates each, as follows:–

page 554 note 3 Zieten attributes the species to ‘Benz.,’ but gives no reference to that author. Probably, therefore, Zieten was the first to publish a description of the species, and must be regarded as its author.

page 556 note 1 This view is supported by the subsequent discovery in the Museum collection of two more of Zieten's type-specimens (Ammonites discoides, p. 21, pi. xvi, figs, la, b, c; and Ammonites polygonius, p. 21, pl. xv, figs. 6a, b, c), both of which were obtained from Dr. Bruckmann.

page 556note 1 The only place of this name in Württemberg that the writer has been able to find is about eight miles due east of Dettingen and is spelt ‘Gutenberg.’ Gammelshausen is near Boll, which is about nine miles north-east of Gutenberg. There is also a discrepancy about the horizon and locality of the two other specimens in the Museum collection that are believed to be Zieten's types.
