33 This sentence of Polkinghorne is stated out of context; it has to depend on a large framework of assumptions. In its bare form here, however, it raises questions for me: the meaning of “kenotic” to be discussed further on; the meaning of “special” providence (I read all providence as special; there is no other kind); and the idea of “cause among causes” (does this mean that God assumes the role of a finite cause?).
