Reprography and Copyright

The Joint Meeting of the Committees of the Universal and Berne Copyright Conventions

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  13 February 2019

Extract

The rapid development of reprographic technology, and the explosion of requests for copies of library materials have turned the reproduction by libraries of works protected by copyright into a major problem both from a practical and from the legal point of view. The libraries as the traditional distributors of these works are somehow caught in the middle of the two groups with their conflicting interests which are colliding under their roof: the proprietory interests of authors and publishers in the printed word, and the users’ need for information and free access to it. Both groups expect the library to uphold their interests and to serve their needs.
