Resistance to insect pest damage in four cotton varieties in Ludhiana

Abstract

In the field and laboratory, Gossypium arboreum varieties G 27, LD 133 and LD 230 were less preferred by the jassid, Amrasca biguttula biguttula, and the aphid, Aphis gossypii, than G. hirsutum variety, F 414. The arboreum varieties also supported fewer numbers of the two sucking pests than the hirsutum cotton. These varieties proved potentially susceptible to bollworms Earias spp and Pectinophora gossypiella damage in laboratory tests. Interestingly the varieties exhibited considerable degrees of field resistance. In the field, Earias moths showed no preference for any plant part for oviposition among the four cotton varieties. Of the reproductive parts of the cotton plant offered, first and last instar Earias vittella larvae orientated maximally to bud. Nonetheless, the larvae showed no definite pattern of preference for the fruiting structures of the cotton plant. In the laboratory, the four varieties showed non-significant differences in supporting the growth of Earias and Pectinophora larvae. The number of Earias eggs on the four varieties did not vary significantly. The number of fruiting bodies per plant and Earias incidence were unrelated in the four varieties.

Résumé

Dans le champ d'experiméntation, ou au laboratoire, les variétiés de Gossypium arboreum G27, LDI33 et LD 230 étaient moins préférées par le jasside Amrasca bigutula bigutula et l'aphide Aphis gossyipii que la variété G. hirsutum, F414. En outre, les variétés d'arboreum supportait un nombre inférieur de ces deux insectes que le cotton hirsutum. Les variétés susmentionnées se sont avérées potentiellement susceptibles aux dégâts des vers Earias spp et Pectinophora gossypiella au cours des tests de laboratoire, ces variétés ont manifesté un haut dégré de résistance dans les champs à expérimentation. Dans le champ d'expérimentation, les vers Earias, n'ont manifesté aucune préférence pour les plantes quant à l'oviposition parmi les 4 variétés de cotton. Des 4 parties reproductives de la plante de cotton offertes, la premiere la dernière phase des larves de Earias vittella se sont orientées vers le bourgeon en grands nombres. Néamoins, les larves n'ont montré aucune préférence consistante pour les structures de fruits de la plante de cotton. En laboratoire, les 4 variétés n'ont pas montre de différences significatives quant au support de la croissance des larves d'Earias et Pectinophora. Le nombre d'oeufs d'Earias sur les 4 variétés n'a pa varie de façon significative. Il n'y avait pas de rapport entre le nombre de structures des fruits par plante et la fréquence d'Earias chéz les 4 variétés.
