The Use of the African Wasp, Prorops Nasuta For the Control of the Coffee Berry Borer, Hypothenemus Hampei In Mexico and Ecuador: the Introduction Programme

Abstract

The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei, which originates from Africa, is one of the most serious pests of commercial coffee and is now present in most of the major coffee growing parts of the world. Quite recently, this beetle spread into Mexico and Ecuador and is now causing serious economic losses in these two countries. In 1985, a classical biological control programme was started to control the pest using the bethylid, Prorops nasuta and other hymenopterous natural enemies from Africa. During the programme, various studies were conducted in Kenya on P. nasuta and H. hampei including their field distribution and life history. A technique of rearing and screening P. nasuta against plant diseases was developed and several shipments have now been made to Ecuador and Mexico. In 1988 a continuous laboratory culture of P. nasuta had been established in Ecuador and the wasp was also reported to be reproducing in sleeves cages in the field.

Résumé

La trouer de la baie au caféier, Hypothenemus hampei, que est originaire de l'Afrique, est une de plus nuisible du café commercial et existe maintenant dans presque à toute les region principale du café du monde. Récemment, ce coléoptère a envahi le Mexique et l'Ecuador avec la perte economique sérieux dans ces deux pays. En 1985 une programme de la lutte biologique a été commencée pour lutter contre cette nuisible avec le bethylid, Prorops nasuta, et aussi quelques autre parasite de la famille hymenoptère de l'Afrique. Pendant cette programme plusieur d'étude a été fait en Kenya sur P. nasuta et H. hampei; compris leur distribution au champ et saisonnier, cycle de la vie, technique pour du levage et une système de la séléction qu'éviter la transmission des maladie des plantes. Plusieur expédition a été envoyer en Mexique et Ecuador. En 1988, l'élevage du P. nasuta a été établir en Ecuador et c'était rapporté que la guepe était entrain de reproduire dans les cage manche au champ.
