Effect of hexaflumuron, a chitin synthesis inhibitor, on mating success of three species of vector mosquitoes

Abstract

The effect of hexaflumuron, a chitin synthesis inhibitor, on the mating success of three species of vector mosquitoes, namely Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi, was investigated. The three species were exposed to concentrations giving 5% and 50% inhibition of emergence (EI5 and EI50, respectively) at the fourth instar and to 0.005 and 0.05 mg/1 hexaflumuron at the pupal stage. Emergent adults were allowed to mate with each other and with their untreated counterparts. Reduction in mating (evaluated as % insemination) was highest in Ae. aegypti exposed at the larval stage. Mosquitoes exposed at the pupal stage to 0.05 mg/1 hexaflumuron showed higher reduction in mating than those exposed to 0.005 mg/1. The effect of hexaflumuron appeared to be cumulative, resulting in a 78–80% reduction in % insemination when treated males were mated with treated females, compared with untreated males mated with untreated females.

Résumé

L'effet de l'hexaflumurone, un inhibiteur de synthèse de chitine sur le succès de l'accouplement des trois espèces de moustiques vecteurs, à savoir Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti et Anopheles stephensi, a été étudié. Les trois espèces furent exposées à des concentrations donnant 5% et 50% d'inhibition d'éclosion (EI5 and EI50, respectivement) au quatrième stade et à 0,005 and 0,05 mg/1 d'hexaflumurone au stade pupal. Les adultes éclos furent autorisés à s'accoupler entre eux et avec leurs homologues non traités. La réduction d'accouplement (évaluée en % d'insémination) la plus élevée était chex Ae. aegypti exposé au stade larvaire. Les moustiques exposes au stade pupal à 0,05 mg/1 d'hexaflumurone présentèrent une réduction d'accouplement plus grande que celle de ceux exposés à 0,005 mg/1. L'effet de l'hexaflumurone semblait cumulatif, entraînant 78–80% de réduction en % d'insémination lorsque des mâles traités s'étaient accouplés avec des femelles traitées en comparaison des mâles non traités accouplés avec des femelles non traitées.
