Storage Methods in Relation to Post-Harvest Losses in Cereals

Abstract

Storage method encompasses the patterns and periods of storage as well as particular storage techniques. Storage management is therefore a major determinant of post-harvest losses in stored cereals: affecting the magnitude of losses and their susceptibility to reduction. Key issues are the location and scale of grain storage which, in most developing countries, involves both rural domestic storage and larger seal “buffer” storage at district centres, commonly near towns.

Various storage techniques are described and discussed against the background of available informatio on storage losses and with regard to the common patterns and periods of storage in Africa at the farr level and in “centralized” storage. The importance of long-term development planning for cereal crop production and utilization is stressed as a major factor in storage pest management and the reduction of storage losses.

The handling of imported food grains is discussed with regard to storage management problems arising from moisture content/relative humidity equilibria as affected by grain temperature.

Résumé

Les periodes, maniéres ainsique les techniques de stockage sont inclues dans la methode de stockage. La gestion du stockage est de ce fait une majeure determinante, des pertes aprés recolte des ceréales stockés: affectant l'ampleur des pertes et leur succeptibilité à la reduction. Les issues clés sont la location et l'importance du stockage des graines, qui dans la plupart des pays en voie de developpemen comprennent le stockage domestique rural et le stockage “tampon” au niveau des districts, prés des villes.

Des techniques de stockage diverses sont decrites et discutées en relation avec les informations existante sur les pertes dues au stockage en Afrique an niveau des champs et du stockage centralisé. L'importano de la planification á long terme pour la production des ceréales est mise á jour, dans le but d'intensifier la gestion du stockage (logistique du stockage politiques des prix des cereales). La logistique du stockage ainsi que le prix forment le facteur le plus important dans la gestion et la reduction des pertes pendan le stockage.

La façon de manipuler le graines importeés a été discutée en relation avec le problemes de gestion di stockage qui dependent de l'humidité relative qui pentit affecter par la temperature des graines.
