Extract

This is not the book for which Eric Hobsbawm will be remembered. Readers of his many historical works will know better than to regard it as “a concise summary of the thinking of one of the century's preeminent historians,” as the flyleaf claims. But if you ever wondered about the intellectual fit between this brilliant historical talent and his erstwhile Stalinist “socialism,” this book may provide some answers.
