1 Elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly on October 30, 1961.

2 Elected for the year 1962 by the General Assembly on October 30, 1961, as according to an understanding reached at the fifteenth session whereby Liberia would resign on December 31, 1961, the position to be filled by Ireland for the remainder of the term through election at the sixteenth session.

3 Elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly on December 1, 1961, on the understanding that the candidate would resign on December 31, 1962, the position subsequently to be filled by the Philippines for the remainder of the term through election at the seventeenth session.

4 On April 7, 1961, the General Assembly decided that the Trusteeship Council should continue to function on the basis of its membership of thirteen, in spite of the preponderance of nonadministering members, until the end of 1961, when the disparity between administering and nonadministering members was automatically adjusted through the expiration of office of three of the elected members of the Council (Burma, Paraguay, United Arab Republic).

10 On November 6, 1961, the General Assembly adopted a draft resolution recommended by the Sixth (Legal) Committee increasing the membership of the International Law Commission from 21 to 25 members. Accordingly, the members listed were elected or re-elected for five-year terms by the Assembly on November 28, 1961. Countries are listed for convenience of identification only, as members serve in their individual capacities and not as representatives of their countries.

11 On August 3, 1961, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) decided to increase by six the membership of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs and by three the membership of all other ECOSOC functional commissions (ECOSOC Resolution 845 [XXXII]). Elections to fill the vacancies created by the enlargement of the commissions were to take place at the resumed 32d session in December 1961.
