La population du territoire du Togo anglais est d'environ 188,000 habitants, dont 9,652 Chrétiens et 5,678 mahométans. Ses caractéristiques sont la spontanéité, l'esprit de suite, l'intuition, mais aucune faculté de raisonnement. Les enfants sont tres précoces jusqu'à l'âge de la puberté; à partir de cet âge, leur développement devient plus lent. L'indigène imite facilement, mais ne sait ni inventer, ni appliquer. II est incapable d'efforts. Très souvent peu véridique, il est en général plein de bonnes intentions, sans cesse démenties. Très sensible à la musique et au rythme. La population est polygame, mais la moyenne des ménages ne dépasse guère deux femmes. Celles-ci sont très prolifiques, mais la mortalité infantile étant très forte, la population ne s'accroît pas.
