Changes in the interpretation of the past have followed the collapse of the rule of the communist parties in Eastern Europe. The paper particularly charts the rise of nationalism in south-eastern Europe and its academic use by different political groups, and concludes that post-modernists’ advocation of a critical socia-political role for archaeology and their hopes for them are unrealistic when faced with powerful, aggressive political forces.

Auf den Zerfall der Herrschaft kommunistischer Parteien in Osteuropa folgten Abweichungen von der Interpretation der Vergangenheit. Die Arbeit stellt insbesondere das Anschwellen von Nationalismus in Südosteuropa und dessen akademische Handhabung durch verschiedene politische Gruppierungen dar. Der Autor kommt zu dem Schluß, daß die Fürsprache von Postmodernisten für eine kritische sozio-politische Rolle der Archäologie und jegliche Hoffnungen auf diese Funktion unrealistisch sind, sobald ausschlaggebende, aggressive politische Zwänge darauf einwirken.

Des changements d'interprétation du passé ont suivi la chute de l'autorité des partis Communistes en Europe de l'Est. Cet article esquisse la montée du nationalisme en Europe du sud-est et son usage académique par des groupes politiques différents, et conclut que la défense post-moderniste d'un rôle critique socio-politique de l'archéologie et leurs espoirs à ce sujet se révèle chimérique lorsqu'elle est confrontée aux forces puissantes et aggressives de la politique.
