An Investigation into the Distribution of Chlorine in the Blood and Urine in Certain Types of Mental Disorder

The migration of chloride in the blood was first investigated by Hamburger (1) who showed that when blood is exposed to increased tensions of CO2 there is a shift of chlorine ions from the plasma into the corpuscles. This phenomenon is known as the Hamburger phenomenon or chloride shift.
