A note on Lindhard's representation for transverse and longitudinal dielectric constants

Abstract

Lindhard's relation between the transverse and longitudinal permittivities and the magnetic susceptibility is shown to be incorrect. The tensorial nature of the wave-vector- and frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity is emphasized. A Vlasov plasma is used as an illustrative counter-example.
