Serial-section electron micrographs have been obtained of the phagocytosis of Prochloron cells by amoebocytes of the ascidian Lissoclinum voeltzkowi (Michaelsen). This may answer the hitherto puzzling question of how the host tunicate benefits from photosynthetic symbionts situated in an excurrent water flow.
