Replacement of Discharged Cnidae in the Tentacles of Anemonia Sulcata

Extract

Actinians are equipped with cnidae which function in food capture, defence and aggression (Mariscal, 1974). Cnidae cannot be renewed and after discharge they are extruded from the epithelium. Regulation of the spirocyst and nematocyst population must be important, but as yet no quantitative data about this are available for actinians (Picken & Skaer, 1966).
