The Haptophyta comprises a group of microalgae of particular importance in marine habitats, often occurring in ‘bloom’ concentrations, sometimes with devastating effects where the bloom is composed of species toxic to other forms of life. The most familiar species are the coccolithophorids, unicellular organisms encased in calcified scale-like structures, the coccoliths, which are readily preserved in marine sediments and have for a long time been important indicators in micropalaeontological studies. In the middle of this century it was recognized that there was a need to compile and standardize the terminology used in coccolith morphology (Braarud et al., 1955; Halldal & Markali, 1955). This approach was continued by several authors (e.g. Hay et al., 1966; Okada & McIntyre, 1977; Tappan, 1980; Perch-Nielsen, 1985) in published articles, and in the report from a Round Table session at the Rome 1970 Plankton Conference (Farinacci, 1971), which included terms from both fossil and extant taxa. Over the last two decades many new terms have been introduced as observations on coccolith morphology have improved through the use of the electron microscope, and recent glossaries covering various aspects of haptophyte terminology have been published by Heimdal (1993), Kleijne (1993) and Margulis et al. (1993).

The seasonal development of the microbial food web in eastern McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, was investigated during and immediately after the 1990–1991 bloom of Phaeocystis sp. (Prymnesiophyceae: Prymnesiales). From 23 November to 7 December, which was before the appearance of macroscopic colonies of Phaeocystis, both phytoplankton and Protozoa were low in abundance. During the Phaeocystis bloom (~10 December to 7 January), phytoplankton biomass was high and was dominated by colonial and singlecelled Phaeocystis, but other phytoplankton taxa, including diatoms and photosynthetic dinoflagellates, co-occurred. Heterotrophic nanoplankton and protozoan microzooplankton increased dramatically in biomass during the bloom. Non-thecate heterotrophic dinoflagellates were the most abundant microzooplankters. There was no evidence for inhibition of the microbial food web by Phaeocystis. By the post-bloom period, macroscopic colonies were rare and phytoplankton biomass had declined markedly. Microzooplankton biomass continued to rise until the end of the sampling period (23 January). Microfaecal pellets (median size range, 10–30 μm) were abundant during the bloom and post-bloom periods. In the post-bloom period, the heterotrophic protistan assemblage became very diverse, with numerous trophic linkages within the microbial food web. The abundance and diversity of the heterotrophic protist assemblage suggests that there was little control of protists by metazoans and that the microbial food web, consisting of bacteria, algae and Protozoa, was poorly coupled to metazoan zooplankton.

The fish assemblages of rocky intertidal and subtidal (<3 m depth) habitats of the south-western Portuguese coast were sampled between May 1992 and November 1993, using traps, angling and hand-netting, to investigate their structure and seasonal dynamics. The main purpose of the study was to describe the patterns of prey availability for marine-feeding otters (Lutra lutra L., Mammalia) in south-western Portugal, and to compare these with other areas in Europe. A total of 475 fish of 14 species was captured over 150 d of trapping (788 trap-days), and 1575 fish of 15 species were captured over 24 d of angling (76.3h). Hand-netting was carried out occasionally, to supplement the observations from the other methods, and only 96 fish of seven species were captured. The three methods yielded different patterns of the fish assemblage: giant gobies (Gobius cobitis Pallas, 33.7%) and rock gobies (G. paganellus L., 22.9%) were the most frequently trapped fish; corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melons (L.), 81.2%) were the usual species caught by angling; shannies (Lipophrys pholis (L.), 42.7%) and Montagu's blennies (Coryphoblennius galerita (L.), 28.1%) were the most frequently netted species. Conger eels (Conger conger (L.)), giant gobies and shannies showed an uneven distribution along the coast, occurring most frequently in schist shelves, rather than in areas of large sandstone boulders. There was a large seasonal variation, with the catches of most species peaking in winter and early spring, including the majority of those most important in the diet of otters: conger eels, shore rocklings (Gaidropsarus mediterraneus L.), rock gobies and corkwing wrasse. This was also the period when the individuals of several species were heaviest.

Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus L.) were sampled by pelagic trawl over the Porcupine Bank to the west of Ireland between 52°N and 54°N at peak spawning time, between 27 May and 10 June 1992. Distribution of juveniles (age classes 1 and 2) was inversely related to depth, comprising over 90% of hauls close to the coast of Ireland and 20% of the catch on the Porcupine Bank. Egg production increased westwards and was high along the continental shelf edge. Adult spawning fish were found throughout the shelf area and beyond, into waters over 3000 m deep. The results indicate that mackerel spawn over deep water some distance from the shelf edge and may exploit oceanic food resources from deep water.

A dense assemblage of the brachiopod Magellania fragilis was sampled by trawl and underwater photography during the expedition ANT IX/3 (1991) of RV ‘Polarstern’ on the shelf of the Lazarev Sea, Antarctica. Mean abundance and biomass estimates for M. fragilis were 26.15 individuals m2 and 1.13 g AFDM m2, respectively. Growth bands visible on the shell were interpreted as annual growth marks caused by the strong seasonality of food input to the benthos and were treated as size-at-age data. The von Bertalanffy growth function Lt (mm) = 51.67 (1 - e0020 (t +1.326))3.828 described these data best. The annual somatic P/B ratio was very low, 0.046 y1, and annual production amounted to 0.052 g AFDM m2 y1 at this particular site. These results indicate that M. fragilis is a comparatively slow-growing species with very low annual productivity.

An extensive study of an intertidal population of Nephtys caeca Fabricius (Annelida: Polychaeta) was conducted from 1986 to 1988 in I'Anse-à-l'Orignal on the southern shore of the lower St Lawrence Estuary. The sampling, carried out at three levels in the intertidal zone, was designed to study spatio-temporal variations in oocyte diameter (1988), age (1986), density (1986–1987) and individual body weight (1986–1987). The highest oocyte diameters were found in early May when breeding occurred. A relatively long period (from 20 June to 23 August), when oocytes were not visible with a binocular microscope, was also observed. Oocyte maturation began in late summer / early autumn. Settlement did not seem to take place in the intertidal zone, suggesting sublittoral larval recruitment. Peak densities occurred at the intermediate tidal level only in June. Nephtys caeca density varied significantly according to tidal levels, but only in 1987. The number of larger individuals (>320 mg in partial weight) increased markedly with decreasing level on the shore. At the lower tidal level a significant temporal variation in body weight was observed, while mean weight reached its maximum value in July or August 1986. Body weight later decreased progressively (July-November). In June and July 1986 arrivals of juveniles were seen to be greater at every level than during 1987. Six growth-rings were found in the pharyngeal jaws of the individuals in this intertidal population (November 1986). The decomposition of the polymodal weight-frequency distributions of individuals >75 or >85 mg in partial weight isolated four or five size-groups (MacDonald & Pitcher, 1979).

The digestive gland of the tropical sepioid Idiosepius pygmaeus (Steenstrup) (Cephalopoda: Idiosepiidae) is characterized by a single cell type which secretes proteinaceous spherical bodies, the secretory spheres. Changes in the structure of the gland with feeding were investigated through a field sampling programme and a laboratory feeding experiment. Specimens were collected in the field on three consecutive days. There was a significant increase in the number of spheres during the day. A laboratory-based night trial showed that numbers of secretory spheres remained high during the night. After feeding there was a rapid and marked increase in the number of secretory spheres, suggesting that upon registering a stimulus the digestive gland secretes large amounts of enzymes. The process is rapid with an increase in the number of spheres occurred one hour after feeding. A second peak occurred 16 hours after feeding, suggesting that there may be two phases to the digestive cycle. This study examined natural and experimental patterns in the digestive gland and estimated the time involved in the digestive activity of I. pygmaeus.

Within the interstitial Cnidaria, the Hydrozoa dominate, with ten mesopsammic genera (living in the interstitial water of sandy bottoms), while the Anthozoa and Scyphozoa are represented by one genus each (Clausen & Salvini-Plawen, 1986; Bouillon & Grohmann, 1990). The only mesopsammic scyphozoans described so far are the small solitary polyps of the genus Stylocoronella, which is represented by two species, S. riedli (Salvini-Plawen, 1966) and S. variabilis (Salvini-Plawen, 1987). Little information is available on reproduction and nothing is known about the life-cycle of these interstitial scyphopolyps. By establishing a culture of the two Stylocoronella species, their development into undescribed stauromedusae could be observed for the first time

Ilyanassa obsoleta (Say) (Mollusca: Neogastropoda) is a conspicuous biotic element of marine / estuarine habitats along the eastern North American coast. Growth among larger individuals (-18–30 mm shell height) has not been assessed. Trematode infections are common in this group and their effect on growth must be considered. Snails were individually marked, measured, and released on the Cape Henlopen sand-flat at the mouth of Delaware Bay. Shell height change (growth) and trematode parasitism were assessed in recaptured snails. Most or all growth occurred in June and July. Mean growth of uninfected snails was 1–2 mm per season. Snails that started out larger grew more slowly, but there was much individual variability. Mean growth of parasitized snails was 0–2 mm per season and independent of initial size. The maximum age of this snail is currently documented at 7 y, which is too low. Size reflects age only approximately. However, the minimum and maximum age of a snail of given size, based on maximal and minimal growth per season, can be estimated. A mid-range estimate for lifespan of unparasitized and parasitized individuals is 30–40 y.

The copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis Krayer (Copepoda: Caligida), the salmon louse, is a parasite of salmonids. The vertical distribution of the infective stage, the copepodid, was studied in salinity gradients with one step increase of 15‰ (154%e> on top of 304‰), 5‰ (25–4‰ on top of 30–4‰) and 2%> (28–4‰ on top of 304‰) in 1-m perspex columns. Copepodid distribution in a linear gradient, where the salinity increased from 154‰ at 0 cm depth to 304‰ at 87–5 cm, was also recorded. Homogeneous 304‰ salinity columns served as the control. In these, the animals gathered in the top section of the water column in response to 1 h of light from above, and spread downwards in response to 4 h of darkness. In columns with a 15‰ step increase in salinity with depth, copepodids aggregated just underneath the discontinuity irrespective of light conditions. In step salinity gradients of 5‰ and 2‰ S, under both light regimes, animals were significantly more numerous in the step sections compared with the control. In the linear gradient, significant numbers of copepodids accumulated at approximately 20‰ salinity when subjected to 1 h of light. In the dark, there were no significant aggregations. Copepodids were found in 15–17–2‰ salinity in all linear gradient experiments.

Ecological, behavioural and anatomical observations of a commensal bivalve, Peregrinamor ohshimai (Mollusca: Galeommatoidea), were carried out in a tidal mudflat in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The bivalve attached specifically to the longitudinal groove of the ventral side of the cephalothorax of thalassinidean burrowing shrimps, Upogebia major and Lf. narutensis (Crustacea: Decapoda), singly, dorso-ventrally and longitudinally, using its byssus, with its anterior part towards the head of the host. The mantle of the commensal bivalve has wide anterior (branchio-pedal) and narrow posterior (exhalant) apertures. In the living organism, the extended anterior edges of the mantle protrude from the shell and are inserted into the host's filtering basket, which is formed by the setal rows of the first two pairs of pereiopods and utilized for intercepting suspended matter. By beating its pleopods in a U-shaped burrow, the filter-feeding Upogebia shrimp creates water currents, which are also utilized by the commensal bivalve for filter-feeding. The shell length of the commensal bivalve was in proportion to the host's carapace length. This suggests that the veliger larva attaches to a young host and grows, thus maintaining the host-commensal morphological matching. The bivalve is a hermaphrodite and individuals of >8–5 mm in shell length were already producing eggs. Anatomical observations suggest that P. ohshimai is most closely related to the Montacutidae in Galeommatoidea.

A new species, Diopatra marocensis, is described from the fine sand Abra alba community, Sidi Boulbra, south Moroccan Atlantic coast. The new species is a member of the D. cuprea complex and is characterized by having crescentic nuchal grooves, short ceratophores, a short branchiate region, four pairs of modified parapodia with bidentate pseudocompound hooks, pectinate setae with 11–20 teeth, limbate setae with conspicuously serrated shelf, and subacicular hooks from setiger 13–15. Eggs of Diopatra marocensis sp. nov. are deposited in the parental tube, where they undergo direct development and remain until the young consist of 32–34 setigers.

Development in the genus Diopatra has been reviewed and divided into four patterns, ranging from brooding in the parental tube to presumed broadcast spawning (Paxton, 1993). While some information is available for numerous species, the identity of some is uncertain, or the information is only anecdotal. Only three species have been studied in detail. Eggs of D. cuprea are released in a jelly mass that readily dissolves in sea-water (Allen, 1959). Although natural spawning has not been observed for D. neapolitana, Cazaux (1972) was able to fertilize the eggs artificially and culture the larvae. The larvae of both species are lecithotrophic and free-swimming, indicating that they are broad-cast spawners.

Multi-locus DNA fingerprinting was used to determine the degree of genetic relatedness within localized assemblages of the intertidal isopod, Jaera albifrons (Crustacea: Isopoda). This isopod has marsupial development, restricted adult vagility and specific habitat preferences, which will tend to isolate groups of animals on a shore and can potentially maintain the integrity of broods after release from the mother. Total genomic DNA was extracted from six individuals from each of ten ‘rock-populations’ in the South Wales area, restricted with Rsal, Alulll and Haelll endonucleases, and probed using a (TCC)5 oligonucleotide probe. Band-sharing analysis of the fingerprint patterns indicated significantly higher genetic relatedness within rock-populations (mean within rock-population band-sharing value = 0–374 ±0–023 SE) than between (maximum between rock-population band-sharing value = 0–301 ±0033), and at a level that equates to a relatedness between individuals within rock-populations of slightly below half-sibling status. The significance of such findings, in terms of the potential for localized inbreeding and population genetic structure, is discussed.

Since the first visual observations of hydrothermal vents in the Eastern Pacific in 1976 (Lonsdale, 1977) these areas of the sea bed have been characterized by their spectacular, and in most cases, novel fauna. Of the 236 macrofaunal species described from hydro-thermal vents, 223 were new to science according to the most recent estimate (Tunniclif f e, 1991), although there are many species still awaiting description. The vent areas are characterized not only by the organisms present but by those which are apparently absent. Absentees include sponges, brachiopods, bryozoans, echiurans and echinoderms, although the last phylum is represented by occasional sightings of echinoids, ophiuroids and holothurians (Grassle, 1986; Tunnicliffe, 1991; Segonzac, 1992).

As part of an investigation into the impact of commercial trawling on the benthos of Strangford Lough a map of the distribution of the benthic communities in the Lough was required. To provide this an acoustic bottom classification survey of the Lough was carried out using a commercially available system, RoxAnn. RoxAnn processes the information from a conventional echo-sounder to determine the nature of different substrata. Underwater cameras were used to obtain ground truth data to compare with the RoxAnn data. Used in conjunction, the two surveys provided valuable information on the different bottom substrata and associated epibenthic communities present in the Lough.

Iron-containing precipitates, present within the organic matrix of the poriferan Ircinia oros were identified as crystalline lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) by electron diffraction and57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The crystals were located specifically within the spongin filaments, suggesting that the binding and subsequent accumulation of iron by macromolecules present in these filaments were responsible for mineralization. Iron biomineralization did not appear to serve any specific structural role, but may be involved in biological processes such as detoxification.

It is well recognized that Porifera are active in the biomineralization of calcium carbonate and silica, producing beautiful and intricate skeletons (Simpson, 1984). However, the formation of other biominerals is less well documented. Iron biomineralization has been reported in a few species of keratose sponges (Töwe & Riitzler, 1968; Vacelet et al., 1988), and the mineral has been identified as lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH). Lepidocrocite is a relatively uncommon biomineral, having previously been identified as only a minor phase in chiton teeth (Webb et al., 1989; Lowenstam & Weiner, 1989).

The oxygen content of air-equilibrated haemolymph from three species of hyperiid amphipods, Hyperoche medusarum, Parathemisto sp. and Hyperia galba was similar to that of air-equilibrated sea-water. The concentration of haemolymph protein was low in each case. Both features, taken together with the fact that we were unable to detect the presence of copper in the haemolymph in any of the species examined, suggests that hyperiids, unlike gammaridean amphipods, do not possess the respiratory pigment haemocyanin.

All the information available on the O2-binding properties of amphipod haemolymph has been derived from members of the amphipod sub-order Gammaridea. In common with many other crustaceans (Truchot, 1992), O2 carriage in gammarid haemolymph is facilitated by the presence of the copper-containing respiratory protein, haemocyanin (Spicer, 1994). Unfortunately no comparable data exist for the other major amphipod sub-orders, the Hyperiidea, the Caprellidea and the Ingolfiellidea. Consequently we have examined haemolymph from three species of hyperiid amphipod, Hyperoche medusarum (Miiller, 1777) and Parathemisto sp., from the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, and Hyperia galba (Montagu, 1813) from the Clyde Sea area, Scotland.
