Heather Mclntosh, Information Officer at Simpson & Marwick, gives a brief overview of what are, in her experience, the most commonly requested Scottish legal materials, and practical guidance for finding them. Where relevant, she gives details of freely available information from Web sites as this can often be the quickest way of finding and getting copies of the documents, particularly for those outwith Scotland. The article is intended to provide a starting point for those not familiar with Scottish legal materials. Since the set-up of the Scottish Parliament, brought into being by the Scotland Act 1998, there are a number of areas of “legislative competence” within which the devolved Parliament has had the remit to legislate. This has resulted in the publication of a whole new series of statutes, statutory instruments and official publications which has made the sourcing of Scottish material more complex than previously.
