page 317 note * Here h is the thickness, A and B the areas of the two parallel end faces, M the area of the central section parallel to the faces. The formula applies to any solid in which the area of the section is a quadratic (or cubic) function of x, the distance of the section from an end. For an ellipsoid the result is where A 0 is the area of the parallel central section and p is the perpendicular on the parallel tangent-plane.
