EVOLUTION OF LIMOTETTIX SAHLBERG (HOMOPTERA: CICADELLIDAE) IN PEATLANDS, WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW TAXA

Abstract

The world species of Limotettix Sahlberg are reviewed, and 13 new Nearctic species are described: in the typical subgenus — L. conservatus; in the new subgenus DryolaL. elegans, L. minuendus; in subgenus NeodrylixL. urnura; in subgenus OphiolixL. nigristriatus, L. pseudosphagneticus, L. xanthus; and in subgenus ScleroracusL. brooksi, L. medleri, L. obesura, L. scudderi, L. strictus, and L. zacki. Limotettix (L.) emeljanovi is proposed to replace L. luteolus Emel'janov, 1962, nec L. (Scleroracus) luteolus (Sleesman, 1930). The 80 known world species are arranged phylogenetically. From this analysis the genus evidently evolved in the New World from swale and fen inhabiting ancestors that fed on spike-rush. Their bog-inhabiting descendents fed on various rushes and sedges, but apomorphic lineages transferred to ericaceous plants. Adaptation to ericaceous plants permitted invasion of drier habitats, with subsequent radiation on other semiwoody plants, principally Asteraceae and Symphoricarpos.

Résumé

Les espèces de Limotettix Sahlberg du monde sont révoisées ici et 13 nouvelles espèces néarctiques sont décrites : chez le sous-genre typique, L. conservatus, chez le sous-genre Dryola, L. elegans et L. minuendus, chez le sous-genre Neodrylix, L. urnura, chez le sous-genre Ophiolix, L. nigristriatus, L. pseudosphagneticus et L. xanthus, chez le sous-genre Scleroracus, L. brooksi, L. medleri, L. obesura, L. scudderi, L. strictus et L. zacki. Le nom L. (L.) emeljanovi est proposé en remplacement de L. luteolus Emel’janov, 1962, nec L. (Scleroracus) luteolus (Sleesman, 1930). Une phylogénie des 80 espèces actuelles du monde est proposée. D’après l’analyse, le genre a évolué au Nouveau Monde à partir d’ancêtres vivant dans les bas-fonds et dans les tourbières minérotrophes et se nourrissant d’éléocharides. Leurs descendants, habitants des tourbières ombrotrophes, se nourrissaient de laîches et de joncs divers, mais des lignées apomorphes se sont attachées plutôt aux zones d’éricacées. L’adaptation aux éricacées a permis à ces insectes de coloniser des habitats plus secs et des embranchements subséquents ont donné lieu à des espèces capables de vivre sur d’autres plantes semi-ligneuses, surtout des Asteraceae et Symphoricarpos.
