Extract

Total lipid from adult male and adult paired Schistosoma mansoni has been fractionated by thin-layer chromatography. Phospholipid, free sterol, and triglyceride were major components of both mixtures. A remarkably small amount of sterol ester was found in adult flukes considering the prevalence of this compound in mouse blood. Free fatty acids were found to be a minor component. Cholesterol was the major free sterol present.
