In 1986, when the frenzy of renown was first published, let alone in the 1970s, when I first started working on it, little did I know that a few decades later fame and its history would be a subject of expanding academic study. After all, when I was in the midst of writing it, I was told by my agent that I had better hurry up and finish before no one was interested in fame anymore.
