New Light on the Antidoto Against Gongora's “Pestilent” Soledades

Manuscript 3726 in the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid contains two unpublished documents concerned with the controversy that raged over the poetry of Luis de Gongora: the Antidoto contra la pestilente Poesia de las Soledades, aplicado a su Autor, para defenderle de si mismo; and the Annotaciones y defensas a la primera Soledad de Don Luis de Gongora by Pedro Diaz de Rivas. It is the purpose of this study to discuss these documents in terms of the new light which they shed on one aspect of this controversy.

Note 1 in page 746 Photostats of this MS. have been made available to me through a grant from the Research Committee of Texas Technological College and through the courtesy of Sr. D. Tomás Magallón, Jefe del laboratorio fotográfico, Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid. Sr. Magallón describes the MS. as follows: “MS. 3726. Antiguo M-412. Es un MS. en 4° con letra de la primera mitad del siglo xvii. Contiene obras de diferentes autores. Tamaño de hoja en milímetros: 155 X 260. Papel hilo sin filigrana. Foliado el 1–343 con una hoja en bianco al principio y otra al fin. Encuadernacion de final del xix en piel granate con grano (‘chagren‘) con orla y adornos en oro. En buen estado de conservación, salvo unas hojas al principio con escritura confusa, por haber pasado la tinta de la cara opuesta.”

Note 2 in page 746 Fols. 224–248v. Another MS. of the Antidoto was published by José Jordan de Urríes y Azara, in Biografia y estudio critico de Jâuregui (Madrid, 1899), pp. 149—179. The MS. used by Jordan de Urries is described as follows (p. 35) : “La obra de Jáuregui existe en un Códice anónimo de la Biblioteca Nacional, con la signatura M. 107. Consta de 166 folios, y el Antidoto contra las Soledades ocupa los 28 primeros, conteniendo los restantes varias poesias de diversos autores, y entre ellas casi todo el Orfeo del mismo autor .. . Nunca ha sido publicado hasta ahora dicho Antidoto.”

Note 3 in page 746 Fols. 104–179. In the Preface to the 1st ed. of Góngora's works, published by López de Vicuña in Dec. 1627, there is the promise of a second volume, which would include the commentaries of Diaz de Rivas: “Muchos versos se hallarân menos; algunos que la modestia del Autor no permitió andar en público, y otros que en siete años, desde el veinte compuso. En breve se darán a la estampa, con las Comedias de Las firmezas de Isabela, y el Doctor Carlino, la primera ya impresa, y la segunda que aun no acabó, Y aun se aumentará el volumen con los Comentarios del Polifemo y Soledades que hizo el Licenciado Pedro Diaz de Ribas, lucido ingenio Cordobés—Vale,” etc. See Gallardo, Ensayo, iv, 1212. Vicuna, however, was most unfortunate with his editions. The first one was withdrawn a few days after it was offered for sale, and the promised second volume never appeared. The commentaries of Diaz de Rivas have remained unpublished.

Note 4 in page 746 See Miguel Artigas, Don Luis de Gongora y Argole, Biografia y estudio critico (Madrid, 1925), p. 129: “No imaginó, sin duda, don Luis, el toile toile que iba a levantar. En la literatura española no ha habido libros ni poemas que tantas y tales disputas y controversias hayan provocado.”

Note 7 in page 747 Sr. Dámaso Alonso, in La lengua poliica de Gôngora (Madrid, 1935), p. 163, after noting one of these discrepancies makes the following shrewd observation: “Hubo, pues, una primitiva version del antidoto en la que el autor del Orfeo afirmaba haber empleado Garcilaso ‘una sola vez el acusativo griego.‘ Esta séria la que llegó a manos del Abad de Rute. Tal vez Jâuregui corrigio después el pasaje.”

Note 8 in page 747 From the following comment in the Examen, we know that at the time this reply was being written various copies of the Antidoto were making their rounds in Madrid, some containing errors ascribed by Fernandez de Cordoba to the copyist: “Los Lestrigones pueblos fueron de Italia y de Sicilia, confesámoslo no reparando en que algun exenplar de los de V.m. por error del copista, tiene ‘Cihcia,‘ en ambas partes los pone Plinio ...” (p. 461).

Note 11 in page 758 Marginal note to the commentary: “El Antidoto imaginó q el Poeta decia que el Peregrino se olvidó de su dama, y se enamoró de la nobia.”

Note 12 in page 760 Marginal note to the commentary: “El Antidoto, porque no entiende este lugar lo calunia.”

Note 13 in page 762 Marginal note to the commentary: “No entendio esto el Antidoto.”
