The Challenger Expedition and Australian Science

Extract

When the Challenger Expedition reached Sydney in 1874 this first European settlement in Eastern Australia was not yet a hundred years old.

Sydney was then a settlement of 140,000, among whom were several established scientists of distinction, as well as others who were to make their mark in future years.
