Bringing the Real: Lacan and Tupac
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 30 July 2009
Extract
On February 19, 1999, ABC's Nightline devoted its program to examining the veracity of Tupac Shakur's death. Ted Koppel sought to answer the question: Was Tupac's death real? Dedicated to seeking out evidence of a hoax, the discussion never adequately answered the question for me because it failed to be attentive to any definition of the real. Could Tupac, who is imagined as sipping some tropical drink on a remote island — most recently in Jamaica — have died a real death and remained alive?
