Dans le domaine de la mortalité, de nombreuses recherches ont été effectuées pour représenter l'allure de la mortalité par âge au moyen de fonctions mathématiques: citons notamment les travaux de Gompertz, Makeham et Pearson entre autres. La même optique a été poursuivie plus rarement dans le domaine de la natalité. Yastremsky et Lah ont établi des fonctions décrivant la distribution des taux de fécondité générale par âge; pour lisser ces mêmes taux, W. Brass a recouru à un ajustement analytique basé sur des fonctions polynomiales à plusieurs paramètres.
