The genealogy of postcolonial and subaltern studies is traced by focusing on the postmodern and postcolonial critique of democracy. The appropriation of Indian subaltern studies by Africans and Afro-Americans is then analyzed; and the effort, made to position contemporary African art in the context of an upsurge of multiculturalism at the international level. Attention is then turned to the debate about postcolonialism among persons associated with this trend. Two contradictory characteristics of postcolonialism and subalternism are exposed: the indigenous, nativistic withdrawal into one's self and the new routes opened toward universalism.

La généalogie des études post-coloniales et subalternes est retracée avec une attention particulière portée à la critique postmoderne et postcoloniale de la démocratie. L'analyse se tourne ensuite vers l'appropriation des études subalternes indiennes par les Africains et les Afro-américains, puis vers l'effort produit pour positionner l'art africain contemporain dans le contexte d'une amplification du multiculturalisme au niveau international. Nous nous tournons ensuite vers les débats autour du post-colonialisme entre les personnes associées à ce courant. Deux caractéristiques contradictoires du post-colonialisme et du subalternisme sont mises en avant : le repli indigène et nativiste vers le soi, et les nouvelles pistes ouvertes vers l'universalisme.

Dieser Text geht der Entwicklung postkolonialer und subalterner Forschung nach. Dabei wird besonderer Nachdruck auf postmoderne und postkoloniale Kritik der Demokratie gelegt. Die afrikanische und afroamerikanische Aneignung von Forschungen rund um indische Subalterne wird analysiert, als auch das Bemühen, zeitgenössische, afrikanische Kunst im Rahmen von anwachsendem Multikulturalismus auf internationalem Niveau zu positionieren. Sodann wird die Postkolonialdebatte unter Persönlichkeiten, die mit diesem Trend verbunden werden, unter die Lupe genommen. Zwei sich widersprechende Eigenschaften von Postkolonialismus und Subalternismus werden aufgezeigt: der einheimische, angeborene Rückzug zu sich Selbst und die neuen Wege, die sich einem Universalismus öffnen.

La genealogía de los estudios postcoloniales y subalternos se puede trazar siguiendo la crítica postmoderna y postcolonial sobre la democracia. En ella se puede analizar la apropiación de estudios indios subalternos realizados por africanos y afro-americanos; así como el esfuerzo hecho para posicionar al arte africano contemporáneo en el contexto de un surgimiento de multiculturalismo a nivel internacional. Se presta luego atención al debate sobre el postcolonialismo entre los partidarios de esta corriente. Se exponen dos características contradictorias del postcolonialismo y subalternismo: el aislamiento indígena, en pos de su preservación cultural, y las nuevas rutas abiertas hacia el universalismo.
