page 33 note 1 Anthony Payne's String Quartet was written between February and July last year and is dedicated to Stephen Plaistow. Commissioned by the BBC, it was given a first performance of exceptional clarity and expressive conviction by the Chilingirian Quartet during a lunch hour concert at St. John's Smith Square, London, on 4 December, 1978.

page 37 note 1 Commissioned by the Northern Sinfonia Ensemble with funds from the Arts Council of Great Britain, From the Mattress Grave was first performed as part of an Arts Council Contemporary Music Network Tour in February by Teresa Cahill (soprano) with the Northern Sinfonia Ensemble conducted by the composer, in a programme that also included another CNM commission, Robert Saxton's Canzona—in memoriam Igor Stravinsky. Both works were premiëred at Newcastle University Theatre on 4 February; the London premières were on 23 February at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
