The books in this series pursue particular themes as they occur in a variety of societies through time. This approach is designed to combine the depth of current social scientific knowledge with the breadth provided by treating many peoples and areas of the world. The volumes draw upon the insights of many disciplines, including economics, anthropology and sociology. They are written to be accessible and interesting to the student as well as the specialist.
