Abstract

Presented by Professor Nikolaos Tzenios at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on August 2, 2023, this presentation delves into the crucial aspects of patient safety and risk management within healthcare settings. It outlines the role of the presenter's employer, a healthcare management research entity, in advancing innovative healthcare solutions and policies. The presentation underscores the significance of protecting patients from harm and systemic defects, emphasizing the need for safe medical practices and the reduction of costs associated with medical errors. It also highlights the importance of creating structures for risk mitigation and ensuring compliance with healthcare laws and regulations, such as HIPAA. The presentation discusses the current landscape of the organization based on Weick and Sutcliffe's assessment of high-reliability organizations (HROs), focusing on sensitivity to operations, preoccupation with failure, deference to expertise, commitment to resilience, and reluctance to simplification. Key patient safety concerns, including diagnostic errors, healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and emergency preparedness risks, are addressed, along with measures to mitigate these risks. The presentation concludes with personal reflections on the complexity of healthcare processes and the importance of risk management in preventing errors and safeguarding organizations against financial hardship.
