Mathematical modelling of the Germasogeia aquifer

04 May 2021, Version 1

Abstract

Two challenges related to improving the management of the Germasogeia aquifer were presented to the Study Group by the Cyprus Water Development Department (WDD), the public organisation responsible for managing the water resources in Cyprus. The first challenge was how to optimally recharge the aquifer to compensate for the extraction of drinking and irrigation water whilst preventing sea water intrusion. This was approached using both simplified two-dimensional models as well as a variety of software packages. It was shown that employing an optimal recharge strategy could yield a significant reduction in wasted water compared to the current strategy. The second challenge was to predict the transport of pollutants in the aquifer in the case of an accidental leakage. This was approached using numerical simulations of an advection-diffusion equation, finding thatthe location of the sourcehad a significant effecton the overall spread of contaminant.
