Optimizing Material Parameterization for Furniture Production

28 June 2024, Version 1

Abstract

Estofos Gémeos is a family firm that aims to develop an application that helps them with material parameterization for furniture production. The questions raised by the study group are related to this. In this report, we propose a set of ideas that could be implemented for improving digital transformation and we present two distinct methodologies to address the company's request. The first approach is Excel-based and more practically oriented towards being an immediate help of the current decisions. The second approach, based on R software, is more formal and requires a more time-consuming implementation. To better take advantage of the potential information and optimize the management procedures, we propose to take into account several resources, such as databases of clients, stock, and furniture. In doing so, the firm will be able to leverage its digital transformation by using customized and standardized decision tools to support the decision-making process.

Customized furniture architecture
Simple application for cost evaluation using Excel sheets. The data structure followed a relational model, where each excel-sheet grouped materials belonging to a class/group, such as hull, fabric, foam, etc. These excel-sheets could contain one or more tables of product sub-classes/group, when their characteristics allow it. Whenever necessary, these tables were linked to each other. Other tables were built for material in the volume of application and production and administrative service costs.
