Summary

N.B. The chronological gaps evident in this Heft suggest strongly that Beethoven was not yet dependent upon the conversation books, even in public, to carry on business and social interactions. As a result, many of the places, dates, and times posited below remain open to question and further interpretation.

BEETHOVEN [possibly at the Birne restaurant in Landstrasser Hauptstrasse, reading the Wiener Zeitung and its Intelligenzblatt; possibly at midday dinner, ca. 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 1819]:

Türk, Grosse Klavierschule, 12 fl. 30 kr., at Traeg's.

Donau-Fahrten by J.A. Schultes, Vol. 1, with maps, sewn binding, 6 fl. 30 kr., at Pichler's, Plankengasse 1125; also at Anna [sic] Strauss's on Petersplatz.

Inquiry concerning Baron Praun [?]

[possibly at Traeg's music shop, Plankengasse No. 1177, in the walled City, looking at Türk and Burney; mid-afternoon of Wednesday, March 17:]

Reise Musikalische[:] Österreich, Preussen, Sachsen, Bayern, Hannover, Wurttemberg, Baden, Kurhessen, u. s. f. noch 31 Bundesstaaten allein in Deutschland. [Blatt 1v]

[possibly at a coffee house in the City, now reading the Wiener Zeitung's Amtsblatt; late afternoon of Wednesday, March 17:]

The Bank now gives advance payments only on 500 Gulden in banknotes, under the address, “Loan and Deposit Office of the priv. Austrian National Bank.” N.B. But only on state paper.—6.. [Blatt 2r]

Des Meister Hans Sachs Historien u[nd] gute Schwanke, etc., small 8vo, 1818, sewn binding, 2 fl. 30 kr., at Graffer's on Franziskanerplatz. [//]

UNKNOWN [possibly in a public place; ca. Thursday, March 18, or Friday, March 19]: I now ask you for her [Johanna van Beethoven's] house number. [//]

BEETHOVEN [presumably replying, in part so as not to be overheard]: la
