Summary

N.B. The brief descriptions here are based on the full physical descriptions preceding each Heft in the German edition. All Hefte are understood to be in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin—Preussischer Kulturbesitz, except for Hefte 1 and 95, which are in the Beethoven-Haus, Bonn.

Virtually all of the Hefte, except for 1 and 95, bear either annotations or an inserted slip by Anton Schindler or Alexander Wheelock Thayer. Most Hefte also contain librarians’ cataloging numbers, often in ink.

Many of these originally blank booklets have paper shields pasted on to the exterior of the front covers (probably standard at the time of manufacture) for the purchaser to write a title, date, or some other identifier.

Heft 1 (ca. February 26, 1818 – after March 2, 1818): Original pink cardboard cover, covered with green silk. 6 Blatter (leaves); all pages contain writing, some greatly smudged. Format 16.6 x 9.5 cm. Significantly smaller format than all the other Hefte in this volume.

First surviving Heft in the regularly-preserved sequence:

Heft 2 (March 17, 1819 – after May 15/16, 1819): Original gray marbled cardboard cover. 107 Blatter, 13 of which contain no writing. Schindler seems to have numbered three Blatter twice. One Blatt has been torn out from after each of Blatter 17, 53, and 77. Either the upper or lower half of three further Blatter have been torn out. Format 18.4 x 11.4 cm., although Blatt 21 is 18.4 x 7.4 cm.

Heft 3 (November 20, 1819 – ca. December 6, 1819): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 68 Blatter; only Blatt 68v and inside back cover contain no writing. Format 18.5 x 12.3 cm.

Heft 4 (December 7, 1819 – December 12, 1819): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 46 Blatter. Final page and interior of back cover contain no writing. Final page crossed out with red pencil. Format 18.5 x 12.4 cm.

Heft 5 (December 13, 1819 – December 30, 1819): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 70 Blatter; all the pages contain writing. Format 18.6 x 12.1 cm.

Heft 6 (ca. January 7, 1820 – January 26, 1820): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 90 Blatter (Schindler's numbering lacks 76 and 77); all the pages contain writing except Blatt 92v and interior of back cover. Format 18.1 x 12.2 cm.
