In this chapter the focus of attention is on a specific context of communication in which bilinguals play a vital role: translation. The challenges involved in using both of one’s languages in a single communicative situation are particularly high when both languages must be equally active, and when multi-language-readiness is such that it enables a smooth transition from one to the other at each turn. Our focus will be on interpreting in legal contexts. Interpreting is of particular interest to us because it is a highly restrictive context of bilingual action: the competition between two linguistic systems must be dealt with rapidly and accurately and the ultimate goal is to ensure that the translated discourse conveys exactly the same meaning as that of the original. Legal contexts are highly relevant because they provide clear examples of what can happen when the interpreting goal is not achieved: the consequences can go beyond mere misunderstanding or misinterpretation.
