Summary

In the previous chapter I put forward a framework, CASP for Bilingualism, that can be used to capture the differences in bilingual linguistic behaviour by enabling us to account for when, where and why the outputs of different bilingual minds will differ. In this chapter I look at a number of different reports on bilingual linguistic behaviour from different research areas within bilingualism, and I try to synthesise these reports into a coherent, unifying picture of bilingualism, in spite of the vast diversity of language combinations, data types and methodologies. I shall explain the reasons behind the similarities and differences between results from different studies, and in the process, illustrate the relevant interactions among our general principles and the internal and external factors that play out differently on different occasions of bilingual language use.
