Summary

Mutations in the alpha-synuclein gene cause Parkinson’s disease. In patients with these mutations, alpha-synuclein aggregate and literally choke the neurons to death.

Parkinson’s is a collection of many genetic and non-genetic diseases that accumulate alpha-synuclein. Because alpha-synuclein gene mutations cause Parkinson’s, and because clumps of it are found in almost every brain of individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s, alpha-synuclein aggregation must be the universal cause of Parkinson’s disease.
